Art Activity Two- Artist Talk

Bonnie Rychlak is an independent curator, art consultant, lecturer and visual artist. Her presentation was mainly focused on the most famous sculptures she had made in the past few years. Most of her sculptures were made with wax. She was especially interested in Water and the art idea related to it. Besides, she preferred green and blue when she pick wax color. When I first looked at it. I almost thought those sculpture was made by jade.
She started her presentation with series of Down the Drain. Because this is the project barely got people’s attention after Sandy. These works represented the art in everyday life and brought people’s attention on our everyday issue.
However, my favorite series is “pools”. With in this project she shaped lots of different pools and set them on a mirror. I believe that those mirrors could help her to accomplish the idea of “water”.

My favorite one was the waterwork 5  in 2001. The aluminum stick was simple and vivid. semitransparent color gradation of Cast resin worked perfect with mirror. Both Cast resin and terry cloth could remind me the swimming experiences. And I enjoyed a lot.
The last part of her presentation focused on photo narratives behind glasses.

The type of the glass reminded me of the rain. No matter what kind of material or thesis she picked for typical projects, I could all get the main purpose of those works. She has always been so fascinated with the idea of “water”. I think to have an unchangeable idea with the entire project could help people understand her work better.

Art Activity One- Light scape review

Today I saw two light scape project in front of Monty. One is “You and Me” made by India Duncan the other one is a Yoga project by Jerome Eckert-Nathan.
India’s project mixed the idea of hand draw “paper-cut silhouette” and real African landscape. In both parts, there were two main characters in the scene and claps hand with each other. It is a common sense that claps hands represents the idea of friendship. Shows with the song, I could get a fresh feeling of the entire project.
Comparing with the idea of pure and fresh in India’s project. The breath sound in yoga project provides a more excited and intense feeling. Jerome Eckert-Nathan made a connection between different people doing same pose. It reminds me the Black or White MV by Michael. Changing faces or people images could always provide a fancy feeling for me. Jerome Eckert-Nathan mixed the real image and cartoon portrait, which even made it more like a thriller to me. Multiple cells showed the same image could give a grand impression and increasing cells and regular action all tells a military tone.
This two project expressed the opposite feeling. Thus, it is complementary to show in the same place.

Mel Marcelo (Artist Post 3)

He is a young vector artist from San Diego. He was especially good at illustration work. Unlike most the previous artist I posted on blog, he is too young to mentioned in wikipedia or other official encyclopedia. Thus, his personal information is limited online. But since I'm so fascinated with his work I would still introduce his work for my artist post.
Here is some of my favorite work of Mel Marcelo.

His work is really detail on the muscles. Besides, He was really good at using bright colors and high contrast. I found that Japanese carton have some influence on his work as well.

you can found more information and his artwork in flickr.com
